SCOTT COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY RECEIVES $14,000 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES TO HELP MORE ADOPTABLE PETS FIND FAMILIES IN SCOTT COUNTY -- Friday March 15th, 2024

Scott County Humane Society has received a $14,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to help prepare more pets in Scott County for adoption. Some four million pets find themselves in U.S. shelters each year. In partnership with PetSmart Charities, Scott County Humane Society will bring adoptable pets to a local PetSmart location in support of National Adoption Week, taking place March 18 - 24, 2024.

These funds will allow Scott County Humane Society to onboard a new employee to take the lead as Adoption Counselor to help support in-store adoption activities, as well as help fund the purchase of much needed supplies like bedding and litter.

“We’re extremely excited to continue partnering with PetSmart Charities, and the opportunity it gives us to help ensure that more pets get adopted,” said Bethany Giordano, Board Chair for Scott County Humane Society. “Like many organizations, we are still feeling the effects that COVID had on our volunteer base. Having a dedicated employee to help facilitate and conduct adoptions will ensure that we have the resources necessary to help more pets find their forever homes within our community.”

“Shelters across the U.S. are struggling to keep pace with the number of animals coming in and need support from their communities to bring pets and people together,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities.  “We’re proud to support Scott County Humane Society and the essential work they do to care and advocate for the animals that come through their door in need of loving families. Please consider supporting their lifesaving work through volunteering, fostering, adopting, or by making a donation.”

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week is a special time during the year. PetSmart stores feature adoptable pets to meet and cuddle in spacious areas, and staff and volunteers are on-hand to make introductions and answer questions. Potential pet parents can also learn about the products and services they’ll need for the best possible start with their new family members.

TNR (Trap Neuter Return) Program:

Since 2005, Scott County Humane Society has offered the community a spay/neuter program targeting any free-roaming kitten or cat, whether it be feral or a stray. Recognized as a “model program” by Two Mauds, Inc., Scott County Humane Society provides this program to ensure that any cat outside is spayed or neutered, vaccinated against Rabies, and is ear-tipped. The goal of TNR is to help humanely reduce overpopulation of cats in the community, and to consequently reduce the intake of cats and kittens into the county shelter and the subsequent euthanasia of kittens and cats at the county shelter. There are simply not enough adopters to provide lifetime homes for each homeless kitten or cat. Scott County Humane Society will provide a Fixed and Tipped voucher to any Scott County resident or caretaker wishing to spay or neuter any outside kitten or cat. A voucher(s) is good for 30 days from date of issuance. There is no limit on the number of vouchers a resident or caretaker may be provided.

These vouchers are free of charge for community cats which are feral cats, stray cats with no owner and barn cats.

Who is Eligible: Any Scott County resident, 18 years or older, who is able to provide photo ID and proof of residency in Scott County. For more information, call the SCHS Center at 502-863-3279.

How to get a Voucher: Please visit the SCHS Center to receive a voucher, and bring your photo ID and proof of Scott County residency. The SCHS Center is conveniently located in the Indian Acres Shopping Center (Broadway/Pocahontas) and is open Monday-Friday, Noon- 5pm.
