Lovable Lonnie, the "Labor Day Kitten," was found in a rat poison bait box then rushed to Central Kentucky Veterinary Center where he spent Labor Day weekend under a veterinarian's constant care and supervision. Lonnie bounced back quickly from his poisoning, but follow-up bloodwork revealed that his kidneys did suffer from damage from ingesting the toxin. Specifically, his SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine) level was high, indicating his kidney's GFR (glomerular filtration rate) was not where it should be. Lonnie's condition will need to be managed with diet, specifically, by keeping him on kitten chow until he's one year of age (estimated at the end of July 2021), then switching to a prescription kidney-support food for the remainder of his life. He'll need an appointment with a veterinarian post-adoption to discuss the frequency of bloodwork to monitor his condition.

Despite his rough beginnings, Lonnie is literally adored by everyone who meets him and you'd never know he has an underlying health condition from watching him. He romps and plays with all of the foster kittens in his home, is curious as can be, and loves to snuggle his people at every opportunity; he'll melt into your shoulder and purr up a storm immediately, every time. He recently starting showing signs of being a "digger" cat. His foster mom woke up one morning to find a bunch of Kleenex pulled out of the box. The next morning, Lonnie got busted, much to his foster mom's delight (see the photo collage). Digger cats are far and few between, but their antics are amusing to watch. Lonnie's foster mom has a digger cat of her own; the behavior is channeled into a positive outlet by providing a drawer or other container where scarves or towel scraps can be pulled out. It's unknown if this was only a two-time incident, but there's a good chance Lonnie will continue to dig stuff out of boxes and eventually drawers.

Lonnie is young enough that he would probably adapt well to a home with children and/or dogs, given time to adjust. His foster mom hopes that Lonnie's condition won't scare potential adopters off. This unique little guy is definitely worth the extra expense and care for his charming personality. Won't you submit an application for him today?
